Islington Gardeners is a group of committed gardeners who protect and enhance the green spaces in Islington and who organise an annual programme of garden-related activities.
We have around 100 members who are interested in all aspects of gardens and gardening, including houseplants, window boxes, balconies, patios, roof gardens, communal gardens as well as attracting and supporting pollinators of all kinds. You can be eco-conscious or green fingered, and you don’t even have to have a garden or live in Islington to join.
We also encourage a Forgotten Corners & Tree Pits project, whereby a group of members adopt an area of public land near their homes and take over its maintenance, transforming it into a beautiful space for the benefit of all who pass by. Islington Council’s Greenspace is very supportive of this initiative.
We have affiliated membership of the Royal Horticultural Society and London Parks & Gardens.
We provide:
- Discounts at garden centres (IG members only, see below)
- Visits to interesting gardens (some visits are for IG members only)
- Small grants for tree pits and forgotten corners (IG members only)
- WhatsApp group (IG members only)
- An annual plant sale (our main fundraiser)
- Illustrated talks and demonstrations
- Regular newsletters about IG news, events and all things gardening
- Social media (Instagram, Facebook and YouTube)
- Film screenings
- Seed Swaps
- Spring bulb giveaways
- Garden competitions
- Gardening advice
We organise several coach trips annually to beautiful gardens within convenient reach of London. We also organise trips by bus, train or tube to gardens in and around London during the year.
Members get priority booking access to all of our events and day trips. Some of our events are for members only. We will make this clear on the listing for each event. Most of our events are listed on Eventbrite. Make sure you follow us there.
Good to know: IG members also benefit from reduced entry to De Beauvoir Gardeners monthly illustrated talks (£2.50 instead of £5). However there will be some events that are for DBG members only. They will make this clear before the events take place.
The membership fee has been frozen again for 2026
We are keen for as many people as possible to take part in Islington Gardeners, so we have decided to keep the annual subscription at £10 single or £12 family/couple, reduced in either case by £2 if you pay by standing order. Please make sure you use your name as the reference for the payment so that we know it’s you who has paid.
A new membership database
We have been beavering away behind the scenes to introduce a more streamlined and secure way of managing memberships. We are trialling a website called Member Mojo. Renewal reminder emails will be sent via Member Mojo itself. Keep an eye on your inbox for that.
Any ideas?
Islington Gardeners is an organisation run by and for its members. If you have any ideas for gardens that you would like to visit or guest speakers that you would like to hear, let us know by emailing us on the membership email address islingtongardeners01@gmail.com. We are also happy to feature guest contributors for website blog posts, newsletter items, photos and videos. Just let us know if you’d like to take part in IG in that way.
Every year we review our offer for members. Let us know if you have an idea of what you would like the membership to include. Any ideas, let us know in person at events or by sending us an email.
Did you know IG has a wild sister grouping? They are Islington Wildlife Gardeners’ Group. Check them out now.
